Example: Expanding the Scope of Hafh's Travel X Project

At Kabuk Style, while working on the Travel X project for the Hafh platform, we initially focused on a narrow scope—integrating Hotelbeds API to expand our accommodation offerings. This was expected to enhance our property portfolio by around 50%, which was already considered a significant win.

However, during the early stages of market research and user feedback analysis, I identified a much larger opportunity. By exploring blockchain technology, we could revolutionize the traditional subscription model, offering a unique, secure, and scalable travel subscription service. This would not only increase our property offerings but also position Hafh as an industry leader in innovative travel solutions.

I presented this broader vision to the leadership team, backed by data and potential ROI, showing how this approach could expand our customer base beyond traditional travelers to tech-savvy, privacy-conscious users. Initially, there was some resistance due to the perceived complexity and risks of implementing blockchain. However, I convinced key stakeholders by demonstrating the long-term benefits and market differentiation this could offer.

As a result, the project was expanded to include the blockchain-powered subscription service. This led to a 90% increase in our property portfolio, a 30% boost in bookings, and positioned Hafh as a pioneering platform in the travel industry, far exceeding the original expectations.

At my previous role, I was leading a fraud detection AI model deployment for a financial services client. The model aimed to reduce fraudulent transactions by 25% while maintaining a low false positive rate.

I was confident in the model’s performance in the test environment, but when we deployed it in production, we noticed an unexpected spike in false positives. Transactions flagged as fraudulent were legitimate, causing disruptions for customers and increasing manual review work. To resolve this, I:

  1. Investigated the issue by comparing training and production data.

  2. Identified data drift—the model was trained on historical data, but recent transaction patterns had changed.

  3. Worked with data engineers to implement real-time data monitoring.

  4. Retrained the model with up-to-date data and adjusted hyperparameters to improve generalization.

This fix reduced false positives by 25%, improved fraud detection accuracy, and ultimately saved $500M in operational savings across multiple initiatives. This experience taught me the importance of continuous model monitoring and proactively accounting for data drift. Now, I always incorporate data validation pipelines and feedback loops into AI deployments to prevent similar issues.

Would you design a vending machine differently?

One way is to find out if the goal is to come up with a stateful system.

If yes, then vending machine could be : Idle, Dispensing, Refunding, and OutOfService.

Secondly, I'd set up entities:

  • Product: Name, price, button code/location

  • InventoryCount: How many items in the machine

  • PaymentHandler: It would be responsible for validating and processing payments.

  • VendingMachine: Manage current state, and handle transitions. Also track what Product(s) have been selected, and how much money has been inserted (if cash).

Check if the interviewer wants to find out more about error handling

If you had to launch Alexa all over again, how would you do it?

If I were to relaunch Alexa, I would focus on creating a user-centered, utility-driven experience that addresses key barriers to adoption while emphasizing unique capabilities. First, I would prioritize integration with essential daily tasks, ensuring Alexa could seamlessly coordinate across multiple devices and apps, such as calendars, reminders, and shopping platforms, making her indispensable from day one. Partnering with trusted brands to enhance Alexa’s functionality in smart homes, productivity, and entertainment would expand her role in users' lives and foster immediate value.

To address privacy concerns—one of the biggest adoption challenges—I would make privacy settings transparent and customizable from setup, with simple controls to give users confidence over data usage. For example, introducing an “offline mode” and prominent indicators of recording would enhance trust.

Marketing would highlight Alexa as an essential lifestyle tool rather than merely a voice assistant, appealing to specific demographics (e.g., families, professionals, tech enthusiasts) through targeted use cases. Additionally, I would create a robust developer ecosystem with incentives to build Alexa-compatible skills, expanding the platform’s versatility.

Finally, I would introduce Alexa with an initial free trial of premium features, making it easy for users to explore high-value options and become invested in Alexa as an everyday assistant.
