While determining the best model for a machine learning application for a customer classification model, I suggested a two model approach while my team member suggested a single model approach. We discussed the pros and cons during a whiteboarding session, agreed on the two model approach and would fall back to the one model approach if the two-model approach did not drive client success. The model was successful.

In my early days as Program Manager, I managed a project for one of our main customers. This project had a very tight schedule and I promised to deliver the first EVT samples in 3 months.

It was my responsibility to ensure everything would be completed on time, and achieve the quality standards defined by the program and inside the budget approved by leadership.

Unfortunately… when I started to deep dive into the project and analyze all the technical details, I realized that it was not possible to get the prototypes ready on time. I missed the deadline by 2 weeks. I felt bad at that time because I failed, so I immediately started to work on a new feasible schedule trying to mitigate the problem. In addition, I arranged a daily opening and closing meeting with the core team to monitor all activities. The root cause of the problem was a delay in some component's delivery and I also ignored one of the Reliability tests defined by Engineering.

So I highlighted the problem to my manager and I shared with him my new plan. I explained the situation to him and I shared the new timeline that I could meet. Then we worked together to commit to the new delivery date. So I learned a lot from that situation, now I’m always adding some buffer to my project schedules and I work more closely with core team members. But the most important learning was, how important is to be honest and raise your hand on time if something goes wrong.

Success could be measured in multiple different factors. An engineer or a resource would be performing very well in the team, stupendous technically but their relationship with the team should also be desirable. They should be open to collaborate, have good relationship, trust with the team, help cross functional team for collaborating with multiple business teams. Should be able to understand the problem providing right solution at right time, mentoring others in the team and always posses the ability to communicate with at most clarity.

All of this is a 360 degree feedback that one could be considered successful working in an organisation.

In my last role I had to make a UX decision about the product that will balance functionality for the user without compromising performance. After testing a few options and validating it with internal stakeholders I released the updated UX, but then the CEO (who was a heavy user of the product) was against that change. I saw down with him and explained my reasoning and the process that I took to validate the solution, and gave him the option to try it himself on an early version. Once he saw the big picture he agreed that my solution was the right approach, but asked that next time I will consult with him before releasing changes like this.

The last conference I attended was the Open Source Security Foundation. As I was leading the Dart & Flutter security program I wanted to learn about the innovations, tooling and services that other open source projects were using.

There were interesting conferences for tooling to sign artifacts with a single command and how the open source community was working in tooling to build, sign and release artifacts in a secure way for everyone using GitHub.

I learned that there were many technical innovations that I could use to speed up the Flutter Security Program, for example implementing secure build workflows using github actions. I also met several people working on similar projects and took the opportunity to share our lessons learned and challenges. Later on the connections with the open source security foundation proved very useful during technical reviews and collaborations.

Situation:

I was laid off from my first job just four months after joining due to budget constraints. This was a major setback for me as I had just started my career. Around the same time, my father suffered a heart attack, which required me to stay at home and take care of him while he was on bed rest for several months. The combination of losing my job and dealing with a family emergency left me feeling devastated, and I struggled to apply for new roles.

Action:

Despite these challenges, I remained determined to grow in my career. While caring for my father, I focused on upskilling myself:

  • I attended mentor sessions on ADPList to gain industry insights.

  • I reached out to experienced designers on LinkedIn for portfolio reviews and feedback.

  • I enrolled in courses through Interaction Design Foundation (IxDF) to expand my knowledge.

  • I continuously improved my portfolio and resume, incorporating the feedback I received.

I also actively networked with professionals, which helped me regain confidence and visibility in the industry.

Result:

My persistence paid off. Where I once struggled to pass resume screenings, I started receiving recruiter calls consistently. In fact, this very interview happened because I proactively connected with a senior designer, shared my portfolio, and received a referral for this role. This experience not only strengthened my portfolio and skills but also taught me the power of perseverance, networking, and continuous learning.
