Yes, I am an hands on engineering manager

- It all depends on the task and how open ended it is plus which engineers I have eg

If task is open ended all my senior, staff engineers are busy, I will get  clarity on prioritisation eg whats the priority based on eg what benefit it will have? more revenue, customer satisfaction, decreased tech debt etc. Accordingly I will prioritise.

If it requires immediate prioritisation and I cant get my senior folks in this, but I see that this problem can challenge a junior dev, I will try to create clarity for them and assign it to them post clarity.

If none can be done, I will negotiate with senior leadership on prioritisation and compare with all the other items on my teams plate. I will also check if somebody wants to challenge themselves and volunteer for this problem.

Success could be measured in multiple different factors. An engineer or a resource would be performing very well in the team, stupendous technically but their relationship with the team should also be desirable. They should be open to collaborate, have good relationship, trust with the team, help cross functional team for collaborating with multiple business teams. Should be able to understand the problem providing right solution at right time, mentoring others in the team and always posses the ability to communicate with at most clarity. 

All of this is a 360 degree feedback that one could be considered successful working in an organisation.

I would have detailed discussion about the area of improvement. I would go do a self retrospective on the projects, deliverables, behavioral aspects where I lacked and needed to do better. I will note down those things and come with a plan on how I plan to close the gap and share that with my manager. I will be extra conginizant going forward in those situation to make sure i do not repeat the same behavior and demostrate the actions pointed out as gaps. In my next few 1:1 try to gather constant feedback from manager on how he percieves the change and how I can improve it further. Also gather feedback from peers about the same to have incremental improvement.

During new project onboarding I noticed lot of performance  differences across team members, through the regular scrum meetings I watched the overall progress and identified team members rearing help. once identified I setup mentor session with them one on one and guide them with the technology and getting up to speed with the project. Many times I spent extra time to learn in depth and give detailed know how and practice to those team memebers
