In my last role I had to make a UX decision about the product that will balance functionality for the user without compromising performance. After testing a few options and validating it with internal stakeholders I released the updated UX, but then the CEO (who was a heavy user of the product) was against that change. I saw down with him and explained my reasoning and the process that I took to validate the solution, and gave him the option to try it himself on an early version. Once he saw the big picture he agreed that my solution was the right approach, but asked that next time I will consult with him before releasing changes like this.

In Q1 2023, as the SDM for Datapath Responder Runtime team, I was told by my leadership to drop all the project work and focus on Efficiency work to reduce the cost of service as it was a directive from the VP. This was conflicting with my team’s goal to get certified to handle critical data as a platform. One of the projects for critical data certification was to support HTTPS instead of HTTP. The approach we took was to move the web container from the current custom solution to Amazon standard Coral Web server. There were 3 engineers working on this project and we had completed about 60% of the work. Stopping this work to pick up another project which had high chances of failure would mean demoralizing the team and delaying the certification timelines. SDE’s promotion to Sr was tied to this project as well.

I had to use my influence with my leadership to keep funding this project. I presented my case that moving to Coral Web server would make the platform more efficient due to variety of performance knobs such as better thread scheduling, more efficient metric emission, etc. I also leveraged the TPM and Security Certifiers to provide a strong business case to not delay the certification process. Finally, I also committed to finishing the web server migration and the efficiency experiments with performance knobs by mid Q2 to realize efficiency gains from this work before the Q3 and Q4 peaks.

As my last semester as a system engineer student, I went above and beyond on time management of the time of the team and mine, this was on my thesis as student. while we where a team of 4 members, one of our members and I had one of our parents fighting cancer, so we needed to do time management to work in the project and have a correct time management of personal and work time. What I did was stated my focus, helped my companion doing the same noticing in what of the project we where helping the most and focus on that on my case the SQL queries & documentation of the project. Propose the solution to the other members, while also covering more and more in the written part of the project, this solution was applied by me, but i also had to cover sometimes my team member, doing what was also his tasks in this case the design of the project processes, most of the UML diagrams, because the situation of his family member worsen and some one needed to pick up the pace of the project and that person was me

In my previous role at Liberty, we undertook a significant data migration project that involved transitioning legacy systems to modern platforms like Salesforce and AWS Workforce. Initially, the project was planned with a strict timeline, and we had accounted for potential issues such as data compatibility and system downtime.

However, during the migration, we encountered unexpected challenges with data inconsistencies and quality issues that were more severe than anticipated. These issues arose because the legacy systems had inconsistent data formats and lacked comprehensive data validation rules, leading to discrepancies when transferring data to the new systems.

To address these challenges, we had to pause the migration process and implement an extensive data cleansing and validation phase. This involved using Python scripts and tools like Salesforce Inspector to standardize data formats and validate data accuracy. While this extended the project timeline, it was crucial to ensure that the data integrity was maintained post-migration.

After the adjustments, we successfully completed the migration with improved data accuracy, which was a critical requirement for the project's success. This experience taught me the importance of thorough data assessment and planning for contingencies, especially when dealing with complex data systems. It also reinforced the value of a flexible project management approach to accommodate unforeseen challenges.

I recently had to onboard 20 directors and managers to financial resource planning system to prepare for 2025 budget

I organized training session where we invited new users as well as those who used the system before.

At the onset of the session , one of the managers, Joe,  vocally criticized the forecasting system. He especially hit on leverage of Excel for data entry. He shared his frustration about entering numbers in Excel and requested to rebuild the system. I faced difficult situation where new directors were given negative messages that do not add confidence to the task they were expected to do.

My task was to address his concerns while staying focused on preparing the forecast for 2025.

I considered few options: from sharing that this is not a forum for feature requests, to shifting focus to task at hand and overriding his speech with message about budget that we try to prepare.

I chose an approach where I shared difference between situation of Joe with everyone else's.

Joe has large org of over 30 engineers with frequent employee changes. That causes a lot of data updates. The new managers have typically 3- 5 employees in the team and the employees stay for years.

I acknowledged the message from Joe, and offered to get back to him. With that I offered a live demo online training for everyone else so they can see for themselves how to enter the data. That helped the team to be 50% ready at the end of the training.

Deflating the situation was only half of the task. A few days later I reached to Joe to reflect on the situation.

I shared that first of all he is heard. I asked a lead engineer in my team A to work with Joe on implementation plan. After that I said that his message made it very difficult for the new team members to get ready for the budget.  Joe's request is at least 6 months to 9 months long while we needed the budget in 10 days.

As result Joe saw how the situation looked from point of view of new managers. He felt apologetic, but I smiled and told him that its OK and we will be good friends . Finally we not only retained good working relationships , strengthened by this moment but I was also able to help new managers to get ready for the 2025 budget.

In retrospect it would be beneficial to review attendees before the meeting and pre-work the possible situation. That will be a good learning for the future.

I would have detailed discussion about the area of improvement. I would go do a self retrospective on the projects, deliverables, behavioral aspects where I lacked and needed to do better. I will note down those things and come with a plan on how I plan to close the gap and share that with my manager. I will be extra conginizant going forward in those situation to make sure i do not repeat the same behavior and demostrate the actions pointed out as gaps. In my next few 1:1 try to gather constant feedback from manager on how he percieves the change and how I can improve it further. Also gather feedback from peers about the same to have incremental improvement.
