Thanks for taking the time to mock-interview me today with the coding  problem. I'll definitely look into solving prefix-sum problems now.  Also, thanks for pointing out the pictorial representations... kind of  tricky way to think / very high-level, but I'll try to practice it,  basically breaking down the problem statement pictorially.
