And at McKinsey, I was leading development of an internal gen AI search engine
we were building for our consultants. From a purely engineering perspective, the
default approach would be to implement a classical information retrieval
mechanism using keywords. Faster time-to-market, easier evaluation.

But every time I would remind myself that I had reviewed around 1,500 Slack
queries from the consultant community we wanted to build the solution for, and
the queries were not about keywords, but rather a summary answer. So while my
colleagues focused on speed and convenience, I advocated for implementing a
retrieve-and-generate approach and supported the proposal with the query
benchmarks I had created before.

Instead of "This should be better for user experience" I presented the facts –
"Here's what the users need, and here's why a classical IR system will fail
them".

Once we were aligned on the solution architecture, I remained in close
communication with the technical implementation team to help with the embedding,
retrieval tuning, evaluation strategy using Langchain libraries.

Additionally, I configured Heap dashboards to monitor product usage metrics,
thus providing us with feedback loops from our end-users to improve the
solution.

involved from initiation and have extensive knowledge of digital portal. Because
of technical resource constraints we had to descope the integration with lending
system. However I did not want the agents to manually download the data and
upload into the lending system. I partnered with the engineering team to work on
a short term solution to automate the manual download and upload process. This
has a significant impact in ensuring the data didn't get lost between the two
systems.
