No. Not today, and not as a phone.

Meta tried this already. The 2013 HTC First (Facebook Home) failed within weeks,
pulled from shelves after a month. The core lesson holds: consumers don't want a
phone locked to one company's ecosystem, they want their preferred apps on
whatever hardware they already like. A Meta-branded phone competing with iPhone
and Android flagships would face the same resistance, plus Apple and Google
control the OS layer Meta would need to build on or around, which is a
structural disadvantage no amount of capital fixes.

The hardware margins are also brutal and Meta has no manufacturing, supply
chain, or retail distribution moat. Apple's advantage isn't the phone, it's two
decades of vertical integration. Meta would be entering a mature, low-growth
market from zero.

What actually fits Meta's position

Meta already made the right call here, and it isn't phones. It's the form factor
that comes after phones: smart glasses (Ray-Ban Meta) and VR/MR headsets
(Quest). Those are categories where:

* No incumbent has already won the way Apple/Samsung have with phones

* Meta's core assets (social graph, AI assistant, content ecosystem) are more
   differentiating than they'd be bolted onto a commodity smartphone

* The hardware doesn't need to replace a phone, it complements one, which
   lowers the switching cost for consumers

Bottom line

A Meta phone would be fighting Apple and Google on their strongest ground with
no structural advantage. Glasses and headsets let Meta compete on ground where
the category itself is still being defined, and where Meta's actual strengths
(AI, social, content) matter more than supply chain scale. Right strategic
instinct, wrong device.
