I assume the payment gateway needs to have reasonably high uptime (e.g. it is
the endpoint being hit by PoS kiosks, so it cannot go down without impacting
business operations for small businesses). So we'll set up an application load
balancer to handle basic TLS termination, authentication (is this kiosk / app
allowed to access the payment gateway?), user authentication, and session
persistence, and route the underlying request to a service which can
horizontally scale based on demand. This service takes the user identified by
the ALB, and attempts to perform the request - we'll assume that request is
'process a payment for X amount from card XYZ'.

The possible results are a success (indicating the payment was logged and
successful), or a failure.
