virtual functions are member functions of a class. functions that have the
keyword virtual preceding them. these functions can be overridden by the
extending classes and allow polymorphism. for example if we have a class Shape,
that has a virtual function print(). and we have the classes Circle and Square
that extend the class Shape. if the print() method is implemented in the
extending classes, and we have an array of different Shapes and we want to loop
over this array and print the shapes, evey shape uses its implementation of the
print method if it's implemented in the extending class. sometime we have a pure
virtual function, this function is not implemented in the parent class it has to
be implemented in evey child class though

Virtual functions enable the child class to override and also inherit the parent
class definitions. This also helps in modifying the behavior of a function
without making major changes in the testbench
