Hiring is an important function which every leader should be good at. Hiring requirements and how you conduct hiring could be different from one company to another. My personal belief is establish the bar we would want every candidate to minimally meet for the level we are hiring for. This bar could be in the education level, number of years of experience and other things depending on the role. For example for hiring for an AI/ML role, we would look and evaluate the candidate for skills which are required to be hired. Similarly for management roles, we should evaluate how well they would be aligned with our own management philosophies. Pinterest has a mission statement, we should evaluate how this candidate aligns and could contribute towards Pinterest's mission and goals. Similarly the team or org may have their own missions and goals and the candidate should exhibit signals which tells they would be successful here. It is very important to be very conscious of any biases we may have and question ourselves individually and as a group to make sure our decisions are devoid of biases to best of our knowledge. We should encourage diversity in the team, but in the same time be careful to not disrupt the existing team. In the end I would say we should hire in such a way that we think the team would be successful as well as the candidate would be successful in their role.
