I would apply debouncing to cleanse noise such as spikes of the GPIO signal. For
example, a 0 to 1 transition won't occur until the debounce timer or counter
matures. If there is a spike causing the signal to drop to 0, that will be
absorbed by the debouncer. When the counter reaches the limit, it will finally
set the signal state to 1.
