The critical path is the longest path .. the minimum time required to complete the project.
Any delay to the task that's on the critical path will delay the project.
Here are the steps to determine the critical path
1.List out all the task
2.Estimate their duration
3.Establish the depency
4.Write the network diagram to get the critical path

Critical path in a project management refers to the critical steps needed for sequencing the project and completing the project within a minimum / short duration of time.
For ex: For a project release, if the minimum time line that the client has suggested is for a month. Project Manager would identify the sequence of steps and the timeline for each tasks. They would define all possible paths using a Gantt Chart to accomplish the task within the product deadline. Whichever path would be the shortest one would be considered as the critical path for the project release.

I will use as an example the Google Home Infrastructure program. The goal of the program was to identify issues earlier in the process and simplify releases.
A critical path is the minimum number of tasks to complete a project which for Google Home Infrastructure required to identify the task dependencies as well as which tasks were required and which ones were nice to have. The tasks identified as part of the critical path were infrastructure capacity, reliability and scalability to build/test every change and generate more accurate signals. Those were identified as minimum number of tasks to identify issues earlier in the process and also simplify releases by continuously validate changes end to end.
