I am Arun Ramani. I have around 18 years of work experience from companies like
Yahoo!, eBay and PayPal. I hold a masters degree in Computer Science and
Engineering and started my career at Yahoo in 2007. The primary problem we were
solving is to identify efficient means to store and process large volume of
data. Back in the time, Yahoo was generating world's largest volume of data and
the commercial tools out there couldnt meet our processing needs. Hence my team
started working on the Big Data paper from Google and contributed to Hadoop to
use for our processing needs and also contributed back to open source apache
foundation. My experience at Yahoo gave me an opportunity to learn to build
platforms for global scale. After about 4.5 years at Yahoo, I decided to join
PayPal as a founding member of PayPal's Big Data Platform team where I played
two roles. One to apply my learning of building platforms at Yahoo to set up Big
Data ecosystem ground up. Second to work with cross functional teams to identify
opportunities and convert their legacy applications to Big Data. This gave me an
opportunity to work across domains like Risk, marketing, Consumer merchant and
understand their business to technically propose a design in Big Data
environment. Since I was sucessful working with cross functional teams, i grew
as a Big Data Architect for Merchant domain where I had an opportunity to expand
beyond just Big Data applications and standardize solution delivery across
domains.

Around 2017/18 time frame, i decided to relocate back to India for personal
reasons to be with family and I started managing Big Data solution delivery
teams from then on. As some one who had a good background in Big Data
applications, i conducted various meetups/ hackathons and workshops to establish
best practices and put Chennai in the radar as a COE for Big Data. Since I was
successful in the solution deliveries, my portfolio was growing and I started
managing managers since 2019 and became a Senior Manager in 2020. As a senior
manager, my day to day responsibilities are

* To build a horizontal self serviceable tool that simplifies Feature
   engineering by streamling data access, computation and data exposure along
   with observability aspects like monitoring, lineage, governance for multiple
   user personas like Data scientists, Data Engineers, Analysts etc. The main
   problem we wanted to solve through this was to reduce the Time to market for
   our solutions.

* Second major responsibility is to own the foundational data for Consumer,
   merchant and marketing which are used in a horizontal way across domains for
   various business deliveries. The idea was to perform the complex heavy
   lifting in one place and use it across use cases in a standardized way
   leveraging the tool we built

Some of the additional responsibilities were to lead inner sourcing program for
my organisation, represent the site to collaborate with 4 other sites to migrate
our solutions to cloud, eliminate siloed development through collaboration and
so on.

I am also a mentor at PayPal and focus on building the next set of leaders to
various internal mentorship programs. I believe my background experience in
dealing with large volume of data and my inquisitiveness to push myself out of
my comfort zone to keep learning will make me a good fit at Coinbase to apply my
learnings and learn more at Coinbase. Also, I believe block chain as a
technology will expand exponentially and being at coinbase will provide me an
opportunity to work and learn on this cutting edge technology. Lastly, i am
intrigued by the Decentralized financing progam of Coinbase and would love to be
part of coinbase's mission to democratize money. Coming from PayPal which is
another major fintech player, I feel this might be a natural opportunity for me
