My interest in Duolingo starts with my experience as a user, a language lover,
then as a fan of this “magic” Duo on social media, and now have a passion to
help develop Duolingo. I used to learn my first Deutsch (Germany) and Hanyu
(Chinese) on Duolingo app along with my textbooks, and the learning experience
with these two types of materials was a difference. While learning on textbooks
was resourceful and more detailed, it was sometimes quite boring, overwhelming,
and disorienting for a self-learner like me. Personally, I feel Duolingo made me
better memorize words and sentences thanks to a clear journey on the streak map,
repetitive practice intertwined with new knowledge personalized for each
learner, in combination with “competitive factors” like streak, ranking,
minigames, and challenges. Using Duolingo to learn new languages not only helped
me understand the basics of these languages, but also demonstrated how effective
a well-designed, user-friendly app can be in breaking down big topics into
digestible parts, make learners less burnt out in the long term, and render an
engaging learning experience for their users.
As someone who has been involved in making education more accessible throughout
my personal educational projects with The STEAM Project and as a tutor in
English classes for children living in underpriviledged back in Vietnam, I
really appreciate Duolingo’s commitment to democratizing language education
worldwide. With my skills, experience, and a big passion for language,
accessible education, and technology, Duolingo’s values and engineering impact
really aligns with my values.

I've been drawn to Airbnb not only through using the platform for my travels but
also through my exploration of their innovative open-source libraries like
Lottie and Epoxy. These experiences have given me a firsthand understanding of

I interned at a startup in Austin texas, same place where your office is now.
That internship provided me with a lot of full stack experience, and gave me a
small view into iOS development with Expo. I had a lot of fun with the pacing
that the internship provided. Although I had issues with it, for instance, it
didn't always feel like I had the support I needed, and at times it felt like I
was thrown to the wolves, I felt like I was learning something new everyday. It
left me with a bit of a startup bug in my mind, and from what I gleaned at the
career fair, the company as of now seems to be providing that similar kind of
environment and more. I've built a strong foundation of full stack skills and
experience, and I think those skills would map quite cleanly onto y'alls tech
stack.

To be completely transparent I wasn't actively looking to switch jobs, but when
Cashie and Ty reached out about interviewing for a position at Duo Security, I
couldn't say no. I think I've reached a point in my career where I'm ready to
join a bigger engineering team and work on more complex problems at scale. Not
to mention I've always had an interest in the security sector!

This role of Director of Products for this new business line of Casual games
gives me an opportunity to build some amazing casual real money games at scale
and create a new business opportunity for Dream11. Plus considering that I have
previously done this kind of role at my previous company helps me bring in my
experience, knowledge as well as improve on the mistakes i probably did back
then. Not to forget that Dream11 is the biggest RMG platform in India and i'm
also looking forward to learning from the best who built this platform.
